W&J Opens Gary Troyer Tournament With 12-8 Victory

ONTARIO, Calif. –  The Washington & Jefferson College men’s water polo team began its four-match California trip with a 12-8 victory over Caltech in the Gary Troyer Tournament on Friday morning.

The match was the second all-time meeting between the schools. W&J (6-6) also defeated the Beavers during the 2010 season by a score of 22-7.

Four players recorded multi-goal efforts led by freshman Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) who netted three scores. Senior Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) all collected two goals.

Sophomores Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), Justin Brier (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and Ben Mancini (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Twp) each added a tally to the Presidents’ scoring column, while junior goalkeeper Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) made 10 stops in goal.

The Gary Troyer Tournament continues for W&J against Occidental on Friday night at 6:20 pm EDT.
