W&J Opens Home Wrestling Schedule With 26-17 Win; Prairie Earns First Victory as Presidents’ Head Coach

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior 149-pounder Chris Leva’s (Perrineville, N.J./Notre Dame) victory by fall helped the Presidents defeat Manchester 26-17 on Friday evening in non-conference wrestling action at the Henry Memorial Center. 

Leva pinned Chuck Holmquest in 2:53 to record the fall which helped W&J jump out to a 15-0 lead.  The dual-meet victory marked the first at W&J for Head Coach Tommy Prairie.   

Senior 133-pounder Zach Cecchetti (Freeport, Pa./Kiski Area) led off the match with a 16-0 technical fall win (3:39) over Johnnie Carter.  Sophomore Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) followed with a 20-7 major decision at 141 pounds. 

After the Spartans’ first win, sophomore 165-pounder David Dibenedetto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) recorded a 17-9 major decision over Grant Anglemeyer. 

Manchester closed the gap to 19-17 with three-straight triumphs, but senior heavyweight Taylor Potts (Wellsburg, W.Va./John Marshall) defeated Jimmy King by a 6-2 margin and freshman Josh Tropp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) closed the match with a 13-2 major decision at 125 pounds. 

W&J continues the early portion of its schedule tomorrow when hosting its annual open invitational at 10:00 am.
