W&J Opens Outdoor Season In North Carolina
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's and women's track & field teams opened their outdoor seasons this weekend at the storm-shortened Wake Forest Open. The meet was unscored and consisted of teams primarily from NCAA Division I.
The Presidents' top women's finish was recorded by freshman Kristen Galligan (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), who continued to break records during her rookie season. She placed 15th out of 46 runners in the 5,000 meters with a school-record time of 18:37.69.
Sophomore Meghan Poinsett (Salem, N.J./Salem) was the 22nd-place finisher (44 athletes) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.31), while sophomore Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./Juniata) racked up a first-place showing in the shot put "B" competition with a top throw of 35'3".
Senior Taylor Hockman (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) took 13th of 27 in the triple jump (44'11"), 20th of 46 in the long jump (21'3 1/4") and 36th of 60 in the 100 meters (11.43).
Junior Benjamin Kopchick (Clarksburg, Pa./Saltsburg) claimed 12th place of 25 competitors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:59.53), while senior Bryant Wang (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) was 26th of 45 in the 110-meter hurdles (16.16).
W&J returns to action in two weeks (March 31) at the Presidents' own invitational at Cameron Stadium beginning at 10:00 am.
