W&J Places Fourth At CWPA D3 Easterns
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Washington & Jefferson College placed fourth of five teams this weekend at the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Eastern Championships hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On Sunday, W&J (8-13) dropped a 13-11 decision to Connecticut College in the third-place match.
The Presidents opened the tourney Saturday with a 19-10 loss to sixth-ranked MIT. Later in the evening, W&J advanced to the third-place match with a 14-9 victory over Penn State-Behrend.
In the Sunday loss to the Camels, sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) fired home six goals to lead the offense. Freshman Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) notched a pair of goals, while senior Alex Shuey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), sophomore Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and freshman Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) all added one. Junior Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) made nine saves in goal.
Francisco gathered 10 saves on Saturday night during the win over the Lions. Magdic, Dunigan and senior Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) all recorded three-goal efforts, while Krause notched a pair. Shuey, McGrath and senior Mike Johnson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) all collected one goal.
Senior Cameron Chaves (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and sophomore Connor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) both scored two goals against MIT.
Weiland, Johnson, Dunigan, Magdic, sophomore Sam Taylor (Columbia, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and freshman Turner Rintala (New Hope, Pa./Hill School) all supplied one goal. Sophomore Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) stopped seven shots, while Francisco grabbed five saves.
The Presidents will close out their season in two weeks at the Southern Division Championships hosted by Bucknell (Nov. 2-4).
