W&J Softball Drops Two Saturday; Finishes With 1-3 Record At Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. –  Washington & Jefferson was defeated by Frostburg State (10-4) and Virginia Wesleyan (10-2, 5 innings) on Saturday in day two of the Salisbury Sea Gull Softball Classic. 

The Presidents (1-3) fell behind 3-0 after one inning against Frostburg State, but rallied back to tie (3-3) in the fourth on junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham’s (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp.) RBI single.  However, Frostburg State (5-3) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth to pull away. 

Sophomore first baseman Susan Lessman (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) and freshmen pitcher Emily Watson (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and catcher Jen Bahm (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) all had two hits to lead the Presidents.  Watson took the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits (six walks) in 4 2/3 innings. 

Virginia Wesleyan led 3-0 after three innings and sealed the win with five more in the fourth.  Cunningham had two of W&J’s three hits, including a double, and scored the lone run.  Junior pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits (7 walks, 3 strikeouts) in three innings.

The Presidents travel to Florida next weekend to compete in its annual southern swing starting Saturday against Hope at 1:00 pm.
