W&J Softball Season Ends After 3-0 Loss To Geneva
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Samantha Johnson fired a four-hit shutout to lead second-seeded Geneva to a 3-0 victory over third-seeded Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference Softball Tournament elimination game on Friday afternoon at Westminster.
The Presidents close their season with a 25-16 overall record. The 25 victories tied the 2006 squad for the third-highest, single-season win total in school history.
The Golden Tornadoes (22-17), who will need to defeat fourth-seeded Thomas More twice for the conference title, scored single runs in the first and second innings to grab a 2-0 lead. Andrea Hinds added an RBI base hit in the fourth for the three-run cushion.
W&J threatened in the sixth, placing runners at first and third with two outs, but Johnson induced a groundout before retiring the Presidents in order in the seventh.
Senior second baseman Stephanie Zur (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) had two of the Presidents’ four hits in her final collegiate game. She finished her career with 147 hits (4th in school history).
Freshman Krista McCartney (Salem, Ohio/United Local) suffered the loss in the circle after allowing two runs on two hits in three innings. She struck out two batters and issued a pair of walks.
