W&J Softball Splits With FSU In Maryland
FROSTBURG, Md. -- Washington & Jefferson was limited to one base hit in a 2-0 loss to Frostburg State in Sunday's non-conference softball opener, but bounced back to defeat the host Bobcats 7-4 in the second contest.
The Presidents (16-10) were held without a base runner until the sixth inning in game one against FSU's Mary Anne Moore. However, senior center fielder D.J. Ufolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) led off with a single down the left field line six outs away from the perfect game. Ufolla reached second base after a sacrifice bunt, but Moore retired the final two batters to leave the tying run at second. Moore improved to 13-3 overall during the one-hitter in which she fanned one.
Freshman Krista McCartney (Salem, Ohio/United Local) tossed four scoreless innings before Frostburg struck for back-to-back runs in the fifth and sixth to earn the win. McCartney limited the Bobcats to five hits (one walk) and struck out five.
The Presidents wasted little time in game two with four runs in the top of the first inning. Juniors Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) and Susan Lessman (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) brought home the first two runs on fielder's choices, while freshman designated player Morgan Figura (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) singled in another run. Sophomore left fielder Breanna Gleason (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) worked a bases-loaded walk for the fourth run.
FSU (24-7) closed to within 4-3 after four innings, but W&J added breathing room with three runs in the seventh. All three came around to score on one play, a groundout by sophomore right fielder Chalese Wilson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston). After out was recorded, two more runs scored on a throwing error.
McCartney pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on two hits for the save. Rotto hurled the first two scoreless frames to pick up the win. She gave up two hits and walked a pair. Rotto also went 2-for-4 at the plate (single, double), the only President with more than one hit.
W&J returns to conference play on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Grove City at 3:30 pm.
