W&J Softball Splits With Grove City After Late Wolverine Rally
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson and Grove City split a pair of one-run Presidents’ Athletic Conference softball games on Thursday at Brooks Park. The Presidents (19-11, 8-4 PAC) came from behind to win game one 2-1, but the Wolverines (5-17, 2-10 PAC) earned a split after scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh of game two to claim a 7-6 triumph.
Junior pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) silenced the Wolverine bats in the first game by twirling a five-hitter. The only run that scored (unearned) came during the top of the first inning. She allowed just three hits the rest of the way and struck out eight.
W&J trailed until the fifth inning when junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and senior second baseman Stephanie Zur (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) drew two-out walks and sophomore third baseman Sadie Marak (Butler, Pa./Butler) followed with a two-run double.
Marak was the only player on either team to record more than one hit as she singled and doubled, while also drawing one walk in three plate appearances.
Lauren Clarke suffered the loss for the Wolverines. She gave up six hits and walked three (one strikeout).
W&J took a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning of game two and then upped it to 6-1 after another Marak double as well as a Rotto’s RBI two-base hit.
Allison Rayburn blooped a two-run single to bring the Wolverines to within 6-3 in the fifth and Claire Haumesser capped the seventh inning two-out rally with a bases-loaded double off of freshman Krista McCartney (Salem, Ohio/United Local) that scored two and ended the game. McCartney started in the circle for the Presidents and re-entered for the final at-bat.
Sophomore reliever Bethany Shepherd (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) took the loss for W&J, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. McCartney surrendered two earned runs on 10 hits in four innings. Marak scored twice and finished the day with four runs batted in, while Rotto went 3-for-4 in game two. Cunningham also singled twice.
Clarke recorded the victory in relief after picking up Grove City’s final five outs. Clarke, Rayburn and Megan Lynskey all went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
W&J looks to bounce back Saturday at defending PAC champion Geneva (1:00 pm).
