W&J Softball Wraps Up Florida Swing With Seven Wins
CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team split its games on Thursday during its final day at the NTC Games. The Presidents posted a 7-3 record in Florida after defeating Dubuque 5-4, but falling to Babson 7-3.
W&J (8-6) trailed Dubuque (Iowa) 2-0 heading into the fourth inning, but rallied for all five of its runs. Back-to-back triples by senior center fielder D.J. Ufolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) and sophomore right fielder Chalese Wilson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) provided the first run, while junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and sophomore third baseman Sadie Marak (Butler, Pa./Butler) followed with RBI doubles. Freshman Emily Watson (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) knocked in the final run on a single.
Marak led the lineup with a pair of hits, while freshman Krista McCartney (Salem, Ohio/United Local) recorded the win in the circle.
The Presidents allowed two runs in each of the first two innings against Babson (Mass.), but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) led off with a double and sophomore catcher Susan Lessman (Salem, Ohio/United Local) drew a walk. Ufolla brought both Presidents home on a double and sophomore Breanna Gleason (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) added a sacrifice fly.
The score remained that way until the seventh when Babson plated a trio of insurance runs in the seventh. Watson took the loss for W&J after allowing four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Washington & Jefferson returns north for a Monday doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg (3:30 pm).
