W&J Swimmers Sweep PAC Weekly Awards

WASHINGTON, Pa. --  Washington & Jefferson College seniors Michael Boutwell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) and Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) were awarded the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimmer of the Week honors on Monday.

For Vogel, it was her second PAC weekly award of the season and sixth of her career.  Boutwell collected the honor for the second time of his career.

Vogel broke a pair of W&J pool records as the W&J women (9-1, 4-1) defeated Penn State-Behrend 149-100.  She swam to a time of 18:17.88 in the 1650 freestyle which bested the previous record by 27.5 seconds.  Vogel joined classmate C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and freshmen Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) for the record-breaking 800 freestyle relay (8:07.67), which took down the previous mark by almost 18 seconds.

In all, Vogel won four events after also touching first in the 50 freestyle (26.30) and 200 backstroke (2:15.65).

Boutwell was a three-time victor on Saturday for the W&J men’s team (3-5, 2-2), which fell to Penn State-Behrend 160-137.  He touched first in the 400 IM (4:31.75), 500 freestyle (5:04.15) and 1650 freestyle (17:35.89).

Boutwell is a three-time All-PAC swimmer.  In 2009-10, he was a first-team selection.
