W&J Swimming & Diving Earns CSCAA Scholar All-America Status

WASHINGTON, Pa. --  The Washington & Jefferson College swimming & diving teams were both honored Thursday as Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Teams.

To earn CSCAA Scholar All-America team honors, the squad must have a 3.00 combined team grade-point average for the Fall 2011 semester.  Out of the 243 women’s NCAA Division III women’s swimming & diving teams, 136 earned the honor, while 76 of the nation’s 204 men’s squads were recognized.

The W&J women combined for a 3.25 GPA which is the 98th-best average in NCAA Division III, while the men’s team produced a 3.11 GPA, the 58th-ranked number nationally.

Both squads placed third (3rd of 6 W; 3rd of 5 M) at last weekend’s 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships.  W&J set three school records at the championship meet and swept the men’s and women’s 1- and 3-meter diving events.  Diving Coach Vic Galati was selected as the PAC Men’s and Women’s Diving Coach of the Year.

During the regular-season, the women’s team posted an 11-1 record, while the men collected a 4-6 mark.  Since 2004, the W&J women’s program has amassed a 94-9 record in dual meets.

Washington & Jefferson swimming & diving is led by Head Coach Mike Orstein, who just completed his 24th season for the Presidents.  On Jan. 28, he earned his 400th dual-meet victory at the college (401-161-1, .713).  In 28 overall years as a Division III head coach, Orstein boasts a 461-186-2 record (.712).
