W&J Swimming & Diving Earns Scholar All-America Team Awards
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The College Swimming Coaches Association of America released its NCAA Division III Scholar All-America Teams for the Spring 2012 semester on Wednesday and both Washington & Jefferson College squads were selected.
Both W&J teams notched the highest combined, semester grade-point averages in school history as the women posted a 3.39 GPA (50th in NCAA Division III), while the Presidents’ men ranked 31st nationally with a 3.27. A total of 78 men’s and 122 women’s NCAA Division III programs were honored.
The CSCAA Team Scholar All American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
This past winter, the W&J women also excelled in the pool with an 11-1 dual-meet record. 2012 graduate and seven-time Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) earned a second-straight invitation to the NCAA Division III Diving Championships and produced two more All-America awards to bring her career total to four.
At the 2012 PAC Swimming & Diving Championships, both W&J teams took third place as the women garnered 648 points and the men notched 451.
The Presidents are led by Head Coach Mike Orstein, who has accumulated nine team PAC Championships (8 women, 1 men) during his 25-year tenure at W&J. Orstein owns a 401-161-1 record with the Presidents and 461 dual-meet victories during his 28 years overall as a collegiate head coach.
