W&J Swimming & Diving Sweeps West Virginia Wesleyan

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior Jami Andrews (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomores Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) all claimed four victories for the Washington & Jefferson College women’s swimming team during a 118-68 win against NCAA Division II West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.  In addition, four double winners highlighted the Presidents’ men’s squad during a 150-109 victory over the Bobcats.

The W&J women earned victories during all 14 races as well as both diving events to remain unbeaten (3-0), while the men’s team also continued its winning ways by upping its record to 2-0.

Andrews, Lima and Sweitzer teamed with junior Zoe Levenson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) for a victory in the 200 medley relay to open the meet (1:56.22) and Sweitzer and Lima later joined junior Jenna Supp (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and freshman Jenny Matuszewski (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) on the winning 400 freestyle relay squad (3:51.85).

Lima added victories in both backstroke events, taking the 100 with a time of 1:03.33 and the 200 in 2:19.14, while Sweitzer swam to first in the 50 freestyle (25.52) and the 100 freestyle (53.93).

Andrews swept both breaststroke races, posting times of 1:13.10 (100) and 2:38.73 (200) and touched first in the 200 IM (2:22.02).

Levenson collected a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:03.40), while Matuszewski added the top time in the 200 freestyle (2:06.56).

Sophomores Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and Jennifer Suder (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) rounded out the double winners for the Presidents’ women. Boldt touched first in both long-distance freestyle races with times of 5:33.46 (500) and 11:17.03 (1,000), while Suder earned victories in both diving events. Suder totaled 199.25 points on the 1-meter platform and 219.00 points at three meters.

On the men’s side, sophomore Ben Mancini (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Twp.) notched victories in the 500 (5:11.52) and 1000 (10:40.45) freestyle events, while classmate Mike Magdic (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) swam to a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke (57.41).

Magdic teamed with sophomore Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) and freshmen Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Armand Paolino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional) for the top showing in the 200 medley relay (1:43.07).

McGrath added a victory in the 50 freestyle (23.21), while sophomore Ross Nappi (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) turned in the top time in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.37).

Senior John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) swept the diving events with scores of 247.15 (one meter) and 237.90 (three meters).

W&J competes at the Henry Memorial Natatorium for the final time in 2012 on Wednesday when it faces Westminster at 6:00 pm.
