W&J Swimming Eases Past Frostburg State In Season Opener
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College swimming and diving teams both opened the 2012-13 season with victories Saturday at the Henry Memorial Center as the men downed Frostburg State 110-82, while the women were victorious by a 115-74 score.
Senior Patrick O’Toole (Butler, Pa./Fox Chapel) and freshman Nicholas Gill (Aurora, Ohio/University Schhol) were both triple winners to pace the Presidents’ men’s squad. O’Toole swam to victory in the 100 butterfly (55.60), 100 backstroke (1:02.94) and 200 freestyle (1:52.29), while Gill was a winner in the 50 freestyle (22.81) and the 100 freestyle (51.49). The relay team of Gill, freshman Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and sophomores Jake Meyers (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) and Anthony Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) turned in the top time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.77).
Picozzi teamed with sophomores Ross Nappi (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Ulysses Laman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and freshman Collin Higgins (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township) on the victorious 200 medley relay team by turning in a time of 1:48.53.
Sophomore Ben Mancini (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township) also claimed a pair of victories as he swam to a time of 5:12.44 in the 500 freestyle and took first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:44.16).
On the women’s side, junior Zoe Levenson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) and sophomore Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) both earned two victories. Levenson was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:57.24) and cruised to an individual victory in the 100 butterfly (1:01.90), while Sweitzer took the 200 freestyle (1:58.06) and the 500 freestyle (5:32.91).
Sophomore Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) finished 36 seconds ahead of her closest competitor during her triumph in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:11.51.
Junior Jenna Supp (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) touched first in the 50 freestyle (26.65), while classmate Rosemarie O’Connor (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) notched the top time in the 100 backstroke (1:02.73).
The Presidents’ divers claimed both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Senior John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) collected 244.30 points on the 1-meter board and totaled 252.45 points at three meters. Sophomore Jennifer Suder (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored 220.15 at 1-meter and turned in a 214.75-point performance on the 3-meter board in her first collegiate event.
The W&J women begin conference play on Wednesday at Chatham (7:00 pm), while the Presidents’ men’s squad returns to action on Saturday against West Virginia Wesleyan (1:00 pm).
