W&J Track & Field Squads Compete At CMU Quad

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's track and field team placed third, while the men's squad placed fourth Saturday at Carnegie Mellon's Quad Meet at Gesling Stadium.

The host Tartans won the men's meet with 171.5 points, while Westminster (166), Penn State-Behrend (161) and W&J (137.5) rounded out the standings.  On the women's side, Westminster claimed the team title (176) followed by CMU (171.5), W&J (139.5) and PS-Behrend (121).

The Presidents' men were led by senior Taylor Hockman (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville), who won the long jump (22'5 1/4") and placed second in the triple jump (44' 5 1/4").  Hockman tied for the win in the triple jump, but was awarded second on a judge's decision. 

Junior Scott Ryan (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) won the 1,500 meters (4:04.43), while senior Greg French (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) claimed the 400-meter hurdles (56.73), took second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.24) and third in the triple jump (40'8 1/4"). 

Junior Jared Jones (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) earned second place in the 400 meters (50.71) and fourth in the 200 meters (23.18). 

The women's squad saw three athletes tie for the high jump title at 5'0 1/4".  Senior C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), sophomore Erin Oberg (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) and freshman Mara Spina all posted that number.  Corcoran also won the javelin with a top throw of 130'3". 

Sophomore Cheyenne Mangold (Boerne, Texas/Texas Military Institute) ran to a victory in the 800 meters (2:21.69) and classmate Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./Juniata) was the winner in the shot put (37'4 1/2"). 

W&J is back in action next Saturday at the Westminster Invitational.
