W&J Track & Field Standouts Earn PAC Weekly Awards
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior Taylor Hockman (Hedgesville, W.Va./Martinsburg) and freshman Kristen Galligan (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) were both selected Monday by the Presidents’ Athletic Conference as Track & Field Athletes of the Week. Hockman took the men’s field award, while Galligan was lauded with the women’s track honor.
Both student-athletes set meet records during victories on Saturday at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational at Cameron Stadium. They also both led their respective teams to second-place team finishes.
Galligan established a meet record during her win in the 5,000 meters (18:16.83) before winning the 1,500 meters (4:55.48). Both times broke school records previously set by Erin Long ’09. The 1,500-meter time was nearly nine seconds faster than Long’s 2009 record and the 5,000-meter mark was just under 40 seconds better than the record Long produced in 2008.
During the fall season, Galligan became the first women’s cross country runner in school history to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Hockman, who qualified for the long jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in the winter, claimed the long jump (23’0”) and triple jump (45’0 1/4”) events Saturday at Cameron Stadium. He also took third place in the 100 meters (11.34) and helped the 4x100 meter relay to a third-place showing (43.85).
A quarterback on the football team during the fall, Hockman was the 2011 PAC Track & Field Most Valuable Performer/High Point Award Winner.
