W&J Track & Field Wins Seven Events At B-W Indoors
BEREA, Ohio -- Washington & Jefferson College won seven events Friday evening at the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-January Indoor Track & Field Invitational. Both President squads placed third out of eight teams.
Baldwin-Wallace posted 212.5 men’s points and 176 women’s points to claim both team titles. Buffalo State (142 Men; 127.5 Women) claimed runner-up laurels in both genders, while W&J amassed 74 men’s points and 88 on the women’s side to capture third-place team finishes.
The women’s squad was paced by sophomore Cheyenne Mangold (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas/Texas Military Institute) and freshman Kristen Galligan (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), who were both double winners.
Mangold raced to victories in the 200 (27.73) and 400 (1:01.33) meter events, while Galligan was victorious in the mile (5:25.44) and 3,000 meters (10:45.66).
Sophomore Meghan Poinsett (Salem, N.J./Salem) placed second in the 500 meters, while classmate Erin Oberg (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) was the runner-up in the high jump (5’ 1/4”).
Senior Greg French (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) won the triple jump championship with a top leap of 43’ 1/2”. He also placed second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.98).
Senior Taylor Hockman (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) earned another indoor long jump crown after topping the field with a top mark of 21’ 7 1/4”. Hockman was also second behind French in the triple jump (42’ 6 1/4”).
Junior Benjamin Kopchick (Clarksburg, Pa./Saltsburg) was the winner in the 5,000 meters (16:18.15), while freshman Joshua Makepeace (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) turned in a pair of fourth-place finishes, posting times of 2:06.83 in the 800 meters and 4:40.85 in the mile run.
The Presidents continue their indoor schedule on Feb. 4 at the Mount Union Wuske Invitational.
