W&J Volleyball Downs La Roche

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team defeated La Roche in four sets in its season-opening match in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.  Set scores for the match were 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16.  The victory marked the first for Head Coach Brooke Turner at W&J. 

W&J (1-0) won its season opener for the first time since 2009, while the Redhawks fell to 0-1.  Sophomore Tori Clark (Fall Branch, Tenn./Sullivan South) led the team offensively with 13 kills. Clark added four digs, while junior Samantha Chorney (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) contributed 11 kills and eight digs.

Freshman Courtney Grdina (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) accumulated 13 digs, while classmate Nicole Bishwaty (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) racked up nine.  Both also added three service aces in their first collegiate match.

Sophomore Lindsey Bennett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) paced the Presidents defensively was three blocks.  She also had nine kills.

Sophomore setter Megan Stoehr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) contributed a career-high 42 assists.

The Presidents host their annual W&J Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Henry Memorial Center.  The tournament is a four-match, round-robin style and Washington & Jefferson begins with Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
