W&J Volleyball Starts Season With Two Wins
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- For the second consecutive year, the Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team has started the season with a 2-0 record after defeating Carlow (3-1; 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22) and Oberlin (3-0; 25-20, 25-17, 26-24) on Friday evening in the opening day of the La Roche Tournament.
The Presidents received 15 kills, 21 digs and four aces from sophomore right-side hitter Nicole Bishwaty (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) during the team's season-opening night. Against Carlow, Bishwaty supplied nine kills, 15 digs and two aces.
Junior Megan Stoehr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) delivered a combined 37 assists, including 23 as well as three aces versus Carlow, while freshman setter Michealia Skleres (Andover, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley) added 25 assists.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) racked up eight kills and 25 digs during her first collegiate experience and senior outside hitter Tori Clark (Fall Branch, Tenn./Sullivan South) notched eight kills against Carlow and five kills and four blocks versus the Yeowomen.
Senior outside hitter Samantha Chorney (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) amassed 10 kills in the Carlow win, while junior middle hitter Darby McMullen (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) totaled seven blocks during the same match.
W&J rounds out the round-robin portion of the tournament Saturday afternoon against Franciscan at 1:00 pm.
