W&J Water Polo Opens CWPA Championship With 12-5 Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. –  Senior Sarah Cull (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and sophomore Kelsey Leis (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) both scored four times to lead the second-seeded Washington & Jefferson College women’s water polo team to a 12-5 victory over No. 7 Utica in the opening round of the CWPA Division III Eastern Championship hosted by Grove City on Friday.

W&J (10-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter behind a pair of tallies from freshman Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./Kentwood East) and one by Leis.

The Pioneers (4-12) managed to close the gap to two goals before the Presidents pulled away for the seven-goal victory.

Boldt finished the contest with a pair of goals, while sophomores Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) and Margot Wummer (Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy) both added one score. 

Junior McKenzie Graf (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made six stops in goal to lead the squad defensively.

W&J, the No. 10 ranked team in NCAA Division III, faces third-seeded Wheaton College in the semifinals beginning at 4:30 pm on Friday.
