W&J Water Polo Rolls Twice On Homecoming
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Tenth-ranked Washington & Jefferson College racked up 18 goals in victories over Monmouth (18-10) and Notre Dame College (18-11) on Saturday on Homecoming and Senior Day at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
The Presidents (6-6) knocked off Monmouth (Ill.) in the Fighting Scots’ first-ever NCAA varsity match. Sophomore Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) fired in four goals for the Presidents, who jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
Junior Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny), sophomore Mickey Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and freshman Nick Willison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) all added hat tricks for W&J.
In the win over Notre Dame (Ohio), W&J once again jumped out to a quick lead, scoring six of the first seven goals. NDC closed to within 8-5 at halftime, but Washington & Jefferson put the match away after outscoring the Falcons 6-1 during the third period.
Magdic and Willison led the way with five-goal performances in the afternoon, while Dunigan and juniors Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) delivered two-goal games.
Freshman Emmet Pierson (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) also scored one goal during both matches.
W&J has now won four in a row and five of its last six. The Presidents look to continue the winning streak tomorrow at Salem International (11:30 am).
