W&J Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off OWU 8-7
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College senior midfielder Brittney Oake (Bell Meade, N.J./Montgomery Prep) and junior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) both scored three goals and the Presidents held off a late Ohio Wesleyan rally to pull out an 8-7 women’s lacrosse victory over the Battling Bishops on Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents (8-3) have now won three consecutive matches. W&J built a 4-1 halftime lead behind two Fradkin goals and one each from Oake and freshman midfielder Breanna Shorten (York, Pa./York Suburban).
Oake netted the first goal of the second half for a 5-1 advantage and her goal at the 14:01 mark put the Presidents in front 8-3. However, Ohio Wesleyan (6-4) rallied with four goals in a seven-minute span to narrow its deficit to 8-7 with 3:04 remaining.
The W&J defense forced four turnovers in the closing minutes, three of which were caused by senior defender Cayla Grodotzke (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun). Grodotzke finished the match with a season-high seven caused turnovers.
Junior attacker Megan Kelly (South Park, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) scored the Presidents’ other goal during the first half. Junior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) totaled 11 saves.
W&J held a 25-21 edge in shots and owned a 14-3 advantage in draw controls. Fradkin collected seven draws to lead the Presidents.
Annie Swanson and Meredith Wholley led the Battling Bishops with two goals and one assist. Lauren Figy also made 11 saves in goal.
Washington & Jefferson hopes to up its win streak to a season-high four on Wednesday when traveling to Frostburg State for a 7:00 pm match.
