W&J Women’s Water Polo Caps New York Weekend With Sunday Triumphs

UTICA, N.Y. – The Washington & Jefferson College women’s water polo team capped a 4-1 weekend trip to Utica College’s CWPA Central at East Invitational with victories over Chatham (9-4) and Connecticut College (11-9) on Sunday.

The Presidents are now 9-4 overall heading into next weekend’s CWPA Division III Eastern Championship Tournament at Grove City College (Apr. 20-21).  Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Jay O’Neil, W&J is two victories away from tying the school record for single-season wins.

In the morning victory over the Cougars, senior Sarah Cull (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and sophomores Margot Wummer (Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Dana Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) all netted two goals.  Senior Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) and junior McKenzie Graf (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) both added one tally.  Graf also grabbed four saves during a stint as the goalie.

Freshman goalie Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) finished with six saves in the cage, while sophomore Kelsey Leis (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) led the defense with two steals.

Wummer and sophomore Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) fueled the offensive attack against the Camels with four-goal efforts.  Cull, Wieber and Leis all contributed one goal.  Lima racked up 12 saves in the net and added three steals.
