W&J Women's Swimming/Diving Defends Grove City Winter Invitational Title
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's swimming & diving team successfully defended its title at the Grove City Winter Invitatational by topping the six-team field on the final day of competition Saturday.
The Presidents totaled 1,148 points to breeze past Wheeling Jesuit (861) and Grove City (848) for the championship. Hiram (486), Franciscan (242) and Davis & Elkins (24) rounded out the women's field.
The W&J men grabbed third place with 854 points behind Wheeling Jesuit (1,219) and Grove City (899).
Sophomore Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) continued to shine for the Washington & Jefferson women as she earned first-place finishes in the 100 (55.29) and 200 (2:00.14) freestyle events, while also helping the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.02) to another triumph. Sweitzer also swam a leg on the runner-up 800 freestyle relay (8:21.60).
Sophomore Jennifer Suder (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) won her second diving title of the weekend with 215.45 points on the 3-meter board.
The men's team was led by senior John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny. Szott swept his second diving championship at the meet with 227.45 points (1-meter), while Magdic touched first in the 100 backstroke (57.00) and second in the 200 backstroke (2:04.50).
Senior Jami Andrews (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) was a part of the runner-up 200 medley relay (1:55.69), while also earning third-place touches in the 100 (1:12.91) and 200 (2:38.42) breaststroke events. Sophomore Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) also recorded third-place showings in the 100 (1:03.62) and 200 (2:15.44) backstrokes.
Freshman Armando Paolino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional) was the second-place finisher in the men's 100 butterfly (54.62) and he also earned third place in the 200 butterfly (2:07.40).
W&J takes a break until after the holidays when it gets back to PAC action on Jan. 9 against Bethany in West Virginia at 6:00 pm.
