W&J's Etzel Named to D3WRESTLE.com All-Freshmen Team
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson College freshman 141-pounder Josh Etzel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) was selected to the 2010-11 d3wrestle.com All-Freshman Team on Wednesday, April 7.
The website picked one student-athlete from each of the 10 weight classes for the national team. Chris Burdge of Centenary (157 pounds) was the d3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year.
Etzel posted a 7-1 record in his first season with the Presidents. His lone loss came in the championship match of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional when he fell to Waynesburg's Nick Garber by a 13-3 margin.
Etzel defeated Garber, who won a pair of matches at the 2011 NCAA Championship after earning All-America laurels in 2010, in the dual meet between the two teams on Jan. 20. Etzel won that match by a 12-9 margin.
Etzel moved into the championship round at the regional tournament by knocking off Olivet's Vince Tucker by a score of 12-6. Tucker was a national qualifier in 2010.
Etzel made his season debut on Jan. 8 at the W&J Quadrangular where he won both of his matches. He also bumped up to 149 pounds in the dual meet with Thiel and collected a fall against Matt Butler in 4:10. Etzel did not compete for Washington & Jefferson at the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
