Wolverines Come Out Ahead in Double OT Thriller
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Grove City’s leading scorer Becky McManus, tallied the game-winning goal with 4:40 remaining in the second overtime to send the Wolverines home with a 3-2 Presidents’ Athletic Conference win over the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team Saturday afternoon on senior day.
A back and forth contest all game long, W&J (8-6, 3-2 PAC) struck first in the eighth minute of play when senior Nikki Hladik (Renfrew, Pa./Butler) bent in a left footed shot to put her team ahead 1-0 early. Hladik’s unassisted goal is her third of the season. The Wolverines (8-6-1, 5-0 PAC) found the equalizer with just under five minutes before halftime, getting a goal from Sarah Cessar.
Shortly into the start of period two, the Presidents took a one-goal lead when senior Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) registered her team-leading 12th goal of the year in the 53rd minute. GCC capitalized on its chances 13 minutes later when Cessar tallied her second goal of the game, knotting the score up at 2-2.
These two squads battled through one 10-minute sudden death overtime period with the score still tied. Six minutes into the second OT, McManus fired the game-winner into a wide open net.
Junior Morgan Kinyon (Stockton, Calif./Oakdale) got the start in goal for the Presidents and made four saves in her 45 minutes of time on the field. She was replaced at the start of the second half by classmate Mattie Follen (Moon, Pa./Moon) who also stopped four shots after logging 60:20 in net.
Through nearly 106 minutes of soccer, 37 total shots were attempted in the match, 20 of which came from the Wolverines.
