Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season With 18-5 Rout In Maryland
FREDERICK, Md. –Washington & Jefferson junior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored three of her five goals in the first half to help the Presidents open their 2012 women’s lacrosse season with an 18-5 victory at Hood Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents (1-0), who now are 4-0 all-time against the Blazers (2-3), rushed out to a 10-2 halftime lead and never trailed. W&J held a commanding 38-12 shot advantage and also scooped up 31 of the match’s 44 ground balls.
Senior attacker Lauren Novak (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) posted the first goal of the year 87 seconds into the game and Fradkin quickly followed 10 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.
After a Hood goal, W&J exploded for seven unanswered tallies to take control of the match. Fradkin started the run, while junior midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) capped the first-half offensive showcase with a goal 42 seconds before halftime.
Washington & Jefferson put the game out of reach with three first three goals of the second half. Junior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) won her third-straight season opener after collecting four saves.
Senior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) added four goals and one assist for the Presidents, while senior midfielder Liz Turcik (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School) and Novak both added hat tricks. Kraus supplied a pair of goals and junior attacker Megan Kelly (South Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle) provided one goal and two assists.
Caitlin Lawrence led Hood with two goals. Helene Butler played all 60 minutes in goal and made 12 saves.
The Presidents, who are now 4-1 in season openers, play in Virginia next Saturday at Marymount (Noon).
