Women’s Swimming & Diving Leads Day One Grove City Invitational Standings

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College women lead the day one standings, while the Presidents’ men are third following Friday’s action at the 2011 Grove City College Swimming & Diving Winter Invitational. 

The W&J women garnered 382 points to lead Misericordia (324) and East Stroudsburg (242).  Grove City is fourth with 129 followed by Hiram (74), Malone (22) and Franciscan (22). 

Misericordia is atop the men’s standings with 295 points, while Grove City (230), W&J (211), Malone (140), Davis & Elkins (69) and Hiram (58) round out the six competing teams. 

The Presidents won four events Friday night, including both diving events.  Senior Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) made her season debut on the 3-meter board and set an invitational record with 2:64.35 points during her victory. 

Junior John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) claimed the 1-meter diving event with 231.45 points. 

W&J swept both runner-up finishes on the boards as well as senior Abbey Woodward (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) posted 241.05 points at three meters and classmate Justin Weifenbach (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) posted 227.00 points at one meter. 

The W&J women’s 400 freestyle relay team ended the evening with a victory in a time of 4:04.34.  Senior C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), sophomore Zoe Levenson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) and freshman Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) swam on the relay. 

Freshman Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) captured the Presidents’ other title by winning the 500 freestyle in 5:21.55. 

Corcoran also placed second in the 50 freestyle (24.93) and classmate Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) also placed second in the 200 IM (2:14.98). 

In the opening men’s race (200 freestyle relay), W&J grabbed a second-place finish as seniors Keyton Kalakewich (Edwards, Colo./Charleroi), Jonathan Weeks (Donora, Pa./Ringgold), Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and junior Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) posted a time of 1:28.91.
