Wooster Hands W&J First Loss
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Wooster scored twice during a seven-minute span late in the first half and held on to beat Washington & Jefferson 3-2 in non-conference field hockey action from Cameron Stadium on Wednesday night.
Wooster upped its record to 2-3, while the Presidents dropped to 2-1, falling for just the second time in their last 10 home matches.
Sophomore Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) got W&J on the board first by stuffing home a rebound in front of the net in the 18th minute.
The Fighting Scots answered as Clare Nelson-Johnson recorded her sixth goal of the season 10 minutes later. Taylor Thorp added a second goal just 33 seconds before halftime for a 2-1 lead.
The scored remained that way until Nikki Sever found a bouncing ball in front of the cage and slid it into the back of the net for a two-goal edge.
Beaudoin responded just over a minute later to pull the Presidents within one; however they could not muster the tying score. The two-goal game was the first of Beaudoin’s career.
Wooster held an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal and recorded nine corners to W&J’s seven.
Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) stopped eight shots in net for the Presidents, while Carrie Mount made six saves for Wooster.
W&J travels to Oneonta, N.Y., on Saturday to face Empire 8 foe Hartwick at 11:00 am.
