Young Lineup Takes Ninth At Season-Opening Tournament

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men’s golf team opened its 2012-13 season with a ninth-place finish in a 15-team, 36-hole field on Monday at the 36th Annual Guy W. Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny College at Meadville Country Club. 

Point Park won the team title with a two-day score of 597 (297-300) to edge the host Gators by one shot (598--294-304). 

Shane Gleason of Roberts Wesleyan took medalist honors (141--70-71) in the 81-player field.  He helped his team take third place in the team standings with 599 strokes (297-302), while Carnegie Mellon (605--299-306), Rochester (610--301-309), Saint Vincent (610--304-306), McDaniel (611--300-311), Daemen (613--307-306), W&J (620--312-308), Muhlenberg (627--306-321), Clarion (630--310-320), Allegheny “B” (634--307-327), Thiel (635--314-321), Mercyhurst (651--316-335) and Westminster (668--326-346) rounded out the standings. 

The Presidents were 11th after Sunday’s opening round on the Par 72, 6,808-yard course, but three players shot scores in the 70s on Monday.  Leading that group was junior Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), who tied for 19th place individually with 153 strokes (77-76). 

Freshman Evan Lestini (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) shot Monday’s low team round with 75 to tie sophomore teammate Matthew Long (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) for 31st place.  Lestini carded 80 strokes during his first collegiate round Sunday, while Long flipped Lestini’s scores following a team-best round of 75 on Sunday and 80 this afternoon.

Freshman Tim Novic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) posted 157 shots (80-77) and tied for 41st place.  Another first-year player, Andrew Miller (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown), tied for 62nd place with 163 strokes (82-81).

W&J is back in action next Monday (Sept. 24) for the first of two rounds at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Fall Invitational at Oak Tree Country Club.
