Three Presidents Named To CoSIDA Academic At-Large Teams
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Three Washington & Jefferson College student-athletes were selected to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team on Friday.
Senior field hockey goalie Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda), junior field hockey midfielder Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and sophomore wrestler Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) were all selected to the District IV team and now advance to the national Academic All-America ballot.
The CoSIDA Academic At-Large program features all NCAA Division III student-athletes in the following sports: Women’s Bowling, Women’s Crew, Men’s and Women’s Fencing, Women’s Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Rifle, Men’s and Women’s Skiing, Men’s and Women’s Swimming, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Water Polo and Men’s Wrestling. The District IV team includes all student-athletes participating in these sports from colleges and universities located in Pennsylvania.
Etzel, who owns a 3.62 grade-point average as a chemistry major, became the first President to earn an invitation to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships since 2003 after winning the 141-pound title at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Presidents’ Athletic Conference 141-pound champion finished the season with a 24-5 record with three falls. He became the 10th W&J wrestler in history to earn NWCA Scholar All-America laurels and will enter the 2012-13 season with a 31-6 career record.
Barno and Colyer helped W&J win its first-ever conference championship after claiming the Empire 8 Tournament. The 2-1 championship game victory over Nazareth gave the Presidents their first trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Barno, who earned the academic all-district laurels for a second consecutive year, led the Empire 8 Conference in scoring with 13 goals and nine assists for 35 points (1.84 points per game). She has produced a 3.90 GPA as a mathematics major. The First Team All-Empire 8 and All-North Atlantic Region choice ranks fifth all-time at W&J with 58 career points. She has played in 52 games during her first three seasons and is fourth in school history with 16 assists and seventh with 21 goals.
Colyer graduated on Saturday with a degree in accounting and a 3.99 GPA. After missing the first half of the season due to an injury, Colyer posted a 6-3 record and a 1.68 goals-against average in the cage. She collected 60 saves and two shutouts. The 2010-11 Capital One/CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-District choice was a four-time Gladiator by SGI/NFCHA Scholar-Athlete who finished her career with 25 victories and 219 saves (2nd in school history).
