What do you know about mental disorders? While some of us come to understand them through personal experiences, others learn about psychological disabilities through creative works and the media. In this seminar we will explore depictions of mental disorder in art, fiction, memoir, and film. Some of the texts we will discuss include The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. Our discussions will go beyond textual analysis to include larger conversations on medical and art history, abnormal psychology, stigma, and gender.
