Westminster Defeats W&J For PAC Baseball Championship
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Behind a complete game shutout from Vince Iosue, fourth-seeded Westminster downed top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College 6-0 in the championship game of the 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.
Iosue scattered five hits over nine innings of work, while striking out three as Westminster (28-15) earned its first conference title since 2005.
The Titans struck for a pair of first-inning runs with a two-run single from Ethan Yeager and tacked on four additional runs in the third.
Sophomore right-hander Mike Vizzini (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) suffered his first defeat of the spring after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and striking out four in five innings. Junior Corey Young (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) went the next four frames on the mound and also fanned four.
Sophomore third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) led 14th-ranked W&J at the plate with a pair of hits in four at-bats. Tim Wiand produced three hits for the Titans, while Yeager knocked in three runs.
W&J, ranked No. 2 in the Mideast Region poll with a 35-8 record, will now await a possible NCAA Division III Tournament at-large bid. Tournament selections will be announced late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
