W&J Routs Thomas More In Series Finale
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Four Washington & Jefferson College pitchers combined to throw a two-hit shutout as the Presidents cruised to an 8-0 victory versus Thomas More in Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball action from Ross Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore right-hander Randy Risch (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) went the first five innings on the mound for W&J (33-6, 21-3) to earn his fourth victory of the spring. Risch struck out six and allowed just two hits, both in the first inning.
Sophomore right-handers Corey Young (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold), Chris Kosty (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Mike Vizzini (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) did not surrender a hit during a combined four innings of relief.
Junior second baseman Scott Liller (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) broke a scoreless tie with a fifth-inning single that plated senior left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory). The Presidents added another run in the sixth to make the score 2-0.
W&J poured it on the Saints (25-14, 13-11) in the seventh inning, scoring six times and sending 10 batters to the plate. Liller added his second RBI hit of the game and sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) provided the big blow with a bases-clearing triple to right-center field.
Staniscia’s triple was his second of the game, helping him break W&J’s single-season record with his eighth three-base hit. Staniscia is tied for first all-time in school history with 12 career triples.
Staniscia and Liller both collected three hits to lead the Presidents’ batters. Staniscia knocked in three and scored twice, while Liller produced two runs batted in and one run scored.
Brenon Russell suffered the loss on the mound for Thomas More. Russell allowed one earned run in his only inning of work.
