Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement

Carolyn Campbell-Golden, Ph.D. is the Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement. Her office is located on the first floor of McMillan Hall.

Dr. Campbell has worked as an administrator for higher education and non-profits for nearly 30 years, and comes to W&J after a lengthy tenure in the Auburn University system. She established the university’s Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations in 1999, and later served as Vice Chancellor for Advancement at Auburn Montgomery (AUM). She has taught as an adjunct professor and established an endowed scholarship at Auburn for working mothers who are pursuing a degree.

Dr. Campbell has served in university strategic planning processes; provided leadership and direction through university accreditation processes; spearheaded initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion; established and implemented faculty and staff advocacy committees; and provided expert leadership and worked collaboratively with governing and foundation boards within the university system, in addition to work in her community.

Dr. Campbell holds a master’s degree in Management from Faulkner University, master’s and doctorate degree in Higher Education Administration from Auburn University, completed Harvard’s Institute for Educational Management program, holds a certificate in College and University Teaching, and is distinguished as a Fulbright Scholar.

Vice President of Student Life & Dean of Students

Eva Chatterjee-Sutton is the Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students. Her office is located on the Upper Level of Rossin Campus Center.

Nicole Focareto

Vice President for Enrollment

Nicole C. Focareto is currently serving as the Vice President for Enrollment at Washington & Jefferson College. She brings nearly 20 years of experience in higher education leadership and enrollment management. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, and a first generation college graduate, Nicole has served in a variety of leadership roles for educational institutions including Belmont Abbey College, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and Marietta College. In these roles, Nicole has been influential in instituting cultural change and building relationships across many constituencies. Nicole holds both a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education and leadership studies and a masters degree in education from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.

Jeff Frick, Ph.D.

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College

Jeffrey A. Frick, Ph.D. is the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, a position he has held since 2019. His office is located in Thompson Hall.

Dr. Frick came to W&J from St. Norbert College, where he served as Dean of the College and Academic Vice President. He has more than two decades of experience in Academic Affairs, having previously served at Illinois Wesleyan University as a professor of chemistry and chair of the Department of Chemistry, Acting Registrar, Assistant Provost and Registrar, and finally as Associate Provost for Academic Services.

Dr. Frick was selected for membership in the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars in 2017, and has been a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective academic honor society for all academic disciplines, since 1995. Earlier in his career he served as a reviewer for various NSF funded programs. He also has been a reviewer for the Journal of Organic Chemistry, Tetrahedron Letters, Organic Letters, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, and the Journal of Chemical Education. He is currently a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, a position he has held since 2008, and a member of the CIC’s Chief Academic Officer Task Force. He is the author of 17 peer-reviewed publications, two published chemistry text books, and has presented at numerous academic conferences.

Dr. Frick holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Loyola University Chicago, and a bachelor of arts in chemistry from Augustana College.

Jim Irwin, CPA

Vice President for Business and Finance

Jim Irwin, CPA became the Vice President for Business and Finance in 2019, and oversees the offices of Business & Finance, Information Technology Services, and Facilities Services.

Irwin brings more than 25 years of experience to his role, having served in both corporate and higher education settings. Prior to his role at W&J, Irwin served as the Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration at Claremont Graduate University (CGU). Earlier in his career, he held positions in the administrative business office at the University of La Verne first as Financial Operations Manager and later as Assistant Vice President for Treasury and Budget. He also served as an adjunct professor for the College of Business and Public Management. Irwin has previously worked with LA Fitness International, LLC and KPMG.

Irwin holds a master of science in Leadership and Management from the University of La Verne, a bachelor of science in Business Administration from The University of California, Riverside, and is a licensed CPA.

Kelly Kimberland Vice President of Communication and Marketing

Kelly Kimberland, APR

Vice President for Communication and Marketing

Kelly Kimberland, joined W&J as the Vice President for Communication and Marketing in 2018. Kimberland, a ’91 W&J graduate, comes to the College with 25 years of leadership experience in marketing and communications.

Prior to her role at W&J, she served as the Senior Director of Marketing Strategy at UPMC Health Plan, where she oversaw the marketing strategy, campaign management and marketing operations for three multi-million dollar business units. She previously served as a manager of public relations for Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute overseeing the strategy and execution of public affairs and marketing communication campaigns on a national & international basis.

Kimberland is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), an organization through which she has received various awards since 2008, including induction into the PRSA Pittsburgh Hall of Fame in 2018. As a W&J alumna, she has given back to the College as a member of the Washington & Jefferson Alumni Executive Council and the professional advisor for the Washington & Jefferson College PRSA Student Association.

Kimberland holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from W&J and a master of arts degree in corporate communications from Duquesne University.

President John C. Knapp

John C. Knapp, Ph.D.

President

John C. Knapp, Ph.D., is the 13th president of Washington & Jefferson College, one of America’s oldest and most distinguished liberal arts institutions, founded in 1781. He also serves as a professor of religion in the college’s Department of Philosophy.

Dr. Knapp is an internationally known author and speaker with leadership experience spanning the education, non-profit, and business sectors. Prior to joining W&J in 2017, he was president of Hope College in Holland, Mich., where he led the development and implementation of a 10-year strategic plan to enhance academic quality, campus diversity, employee development, and post-graduation outcomes for students.
