This ecumenical service is a ceremony that is focused on reflection. It includes a lighting of the Unity Candle (pictured above), and this year will include an address by Reverend Dr. Mark L. Johnson ’94.

The Baccalaureate Service is at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019 at the Church of the Covenant in Washington, Pa. Families are invited to attend the Baccalaureate Service; there are no tickets for this service, but seating in the church is limited so you are encouraged to come early. The doors to the church will open at 4:30 p.m.

Following the Baccalaureate Service, there will be a celebratory reception for students and families on the Rossin Campus Center patio.

About Reverend Dr. Mark L. Johnson ’94

Dr. Mark Johnson ’94 was the first African American Senior Class Commencement Speaker at Washington & Jefferson College, and returns to his alma mater to give the 2019 Baccalaureate address. An instructor and research fellow at New Orleans Theological Seminary in Louisiana, he formerly was pastor of a large church in Cleveland, Ohio. He has served as chaplain of both the Cleveland Indians major league baseball team and the Miami Marlins’ AAA baseball team in New Orleans. Earlier, he had a professional basketball career in Europe and South America. Dr. Johnson earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Theology degree at Princeton Theological Seminary, and recently completed a doctorate at New Orleans Theological Seminary.
