A More Perfect Union: Reform Movements in Modern US History. This course will look at efforts to change the country for the, better. It will include direct government action (the New Deal, and the Great Society), citizens organizing to regulate behavior, (Temperance and Prohibition), government regulation of business, (environmental and safety), as well as private efforts (the rise, of non-profit organizations). Political rights (minorities,, women, gay rights) and political reform (ballot access, campaign, finance reform) will also be considered.
