Sherlock Holmes is arguably the most famous fictional detective, and as such a true British cultural icon. We will study the great consulting detective and his interactions with other characters in an assortment of the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories. We will draw connections to the portrayal of these characters in modern films and the BBC television series “Sherlock”. We will also introduce some modern forensic science. Studying Sherlock Holmes in the context of his cultural society (both Victorian and modern) and through the lens of some amateur psychology helps to define his appeal and offers much in the way of fully appreciating his forensic talent.
