On Monday, March 5th, Dr. Tami Blumenfield will give a public talk on “Environment and Ecology in Southwest China: Wetlands, Mountains and National Parks in the ‘Ecological Civilization’ Era.” Dr. Blumenfield’s presentation will be in Yost at 7:00 PM.
Dr. Blumenfield’s presentation is free, and open to the public. No tickets are required.
The words “China’s environment” often conjure up images of polluted skies and ecological wastelands. These problems are very real, but China is a big country, and its environmental situation goes well beyond air pollution. This talk will discuss a different side of China’s ecology, looking at wetlands and alpine zones in the mountainous Yunnan Province and at efforts to develop national parks in other parts of rural China. These examples will also provide the opportunity to question and explore the Chinese government’s efforts to develop and promote “ecological civilization.” Whether they represent an improved ecological situation or not is an open question.
