W&J Athletics logo on a background of cheering students

W&J participates in Division III athletics in 24 sports. Although many students are recruited for particular teams, students are able to try out or walk onto teams during the academic year. We are proud of our athletic presence in the various divisions in which W&J participates and we encourage the community to support our athletic teams and student athletes – games are advertised on the W&J website and via W&J Weekly, a weekly electronic newsletter that is distributed via your washjeff email.

Please visit our website for more information on W&J Athletics!

If you are a student athlete, please note the requirements and dates that pertain to your sport. In addition, your coach will be in contact with you throughout the summer with more information.

Medical Requirements

The Washington & Jefferson College Sports Medicine Department strives to provide professional care and wellness to the health of all Washington & Jefferson College student-athletes. Our goal is to return our student-athletes to full participation as quickly and safely as possible.

All necessary forms must be completed online or filled out and sent back to Mike Lesako prior to August 1 of each school year. Student-athletes will not be able to participate without the completion of these required forms.

If you have ever been diagnosed or are currently under treatment for any of the following conditions, you MUST provide documentation (including list of medications) from your physician that you are fully cleared to participate (no restrictions) for athletic activities:

  • Heart murmur
  • Any cardiac conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Sickle cell (see below)

Required Forms

All freshmen/transfers/first-year student-athletes are required to complete all of the required forms on the forms page of W&J Gateway.

In addition, you must provide a copy of front and back of your health insurance card to the athletic trainers when you check in at W&J.

Move-In

Football will move-in on August 14 and several other fall sports move-in on August 17 and 21. If you are a fall athlete and your sport requires early move-in, your coach will be in contact with you this summer with specific instructions.

If your sport does not move in early, you will move in during the main move-in times based on your distance from W&J. For more information on move in, visit the Orientation section.

Letter to Parents/Guardians

The athletic training staff also requires that parents/guardians and student-athletes review the "Letter to Parents/Guardians Regarding the College's Insurance Policy" (PDF)
