What GPA was used to determine eligibility for the Good Neighbor Award for incoming freshmen?

The admission office used the cumulative GPA as of the end of the junior year as reflected on the high school transcript submitted with the application for admission. The GPA is rounded to two digits.

What paperwork is required by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) for determination of the Pennsylvania State Grant?

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the PA deadline of May 1st as well as the State Grant Form; available at www.pheaa.org. Eligibility requirements for this grant program are also available on PHEAA’s website.

At what point is the Good Neighbor Award confirmed?

Eligibility will be finalized upon confirmation from PHEAA that the student is eligible for a PA state grant.  This may require PHEAA or the College to obtain certain tax and income information. This confirmation is expected mid-summer.

How is financial need met for this program?

Financial need is met in the freshman year through the use of any federal and state grants/scholarships, any W&J grants/scholarships and the Good Neighbor Award, as well as the maximum Direct Loan and Federal Work Study.  We expect the family to contribute the amount of their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and the student to contribute $3,000 through summer earnings or savings.  The EFC is determined by filing the FAFSA.

How will renewal of the Good Neighbor Award be determined in future years?

Renewal of this award will be determined on an annual basis and is guaranteed for a total of four years if all eligibility criteria are met. Students must complete the FAFSA each year by May 1, which is also the deadline to apply for the Pennsylvania State Grant. Students must continue to be eligible for the Pennsylvania State Grant to remain in the program in addition to meeting the academic progress requirements explained in the College Catalog. If eligibility for the Good Neighbor Award is not maintained, students will be evaluated for a W&J grant to help reduce costs if a FAFSA form is on file.

Will my Good Neighbor Award be the same amount every year?

More than likely, your Good Neighbor Award amount will vary every year since we use your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA to determine your level of financial need.  If your level of financial need increases, we will add up to $500 in the Good Neighbor Award.  If your level of financial need decreases, we will re-evaluate the amount of Good Neighbor award that you are eligible to receive.  Returning students will be notified in June of their award eligibility for the next academic year if all required documents have been received by the Office of Financial Aid.

How does the receipt of outside aid affect the Good Neighbor Award?

Per federal regulation, any outside scholarship received must be added to the financial aid package. Students are encouraged to inform the Office of Financial Aid as soon as possible after being notified of scholarship awards. In most cases, College policy toward outside scholarships is to use those funds to reduce or eliminate remaining financial need. If the total outside aid creates an over-award, adjustments are made first to self-help aid (loans and work study). Adjustments to W&J funds occur only if no other option can resolve the over-award. If an award revision occurs an updated financial aid award letter will be sent to students.

If a student is selected to be a Resident Assistant for the Office of Residence Life in the future, how does that affect the Good Neighbor Award?

Resident Assistants are compensated with an award that covers the cost of their annual room charge. In this situation, the Good Neighbor Award will be reduced by the amount of the room benefit since this expense is covered by the Office of Residence Life. Students will retain their eligibility for work study even if employed as a Resident Assistant to continue to have an opportunity to earn money to assist with indirect expenses.

Can a student who enrolled prior to the 2020-2021 academic year who was not originally eligible for a Good Neighbor Award become eligible in future years?

Students must be eligible for the Good Neighbor Award at the time of initial enrollment at W&J in order to be considered for an award each year thereafter.

Can a Special Circumstance (such as loss of income) qualify a student for the Good Neighbor program?

Eligibility for the Good Neighbor Award will always be determined using the EFC calculated from the income provided on the FAFSA. A state grant may be awarded by PHEAA based on an estimated reduction in income in the current year but this will not meet the criteria for the Good Neighbor Award. Estimated income is too unpredictable in these situations. Families experiencing a change in income should seek guidance from a financial aid representative regarding other aid options.
