Interfaith Leadership Studies

Minor

The Interfaith Leadership Studies minor is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills essential for professional and civic leaders in a religiously diverse society. As our national and global communities become increasingly interconnected and diverse, an ability to work effectively with people with differing religious and cultural worldviews becomes a necessary precondition for success in many professional fields including human services, education, health professions, government, international business, ministry, and law. By combining perspectives from several academic disciplines, the Interfaith Leadership Studies minor helps students obtain a comprehensive knowledge of the social, political, and cultural contexts of diverse religious traditions, and of the significance of interfaith work. Students also receive an opportunity to develop a set of academic, practical, and interpersonal skills conducive to building constructive relationships, mutual respect, and a commitment to the common good across religious and cultural lines.

More information about the Interfaith Leadership Studies program can be found in the Course Catalog.

Beyond the Classroom

Students in the Interfaith Leadership Studies program can – and do – make an impact on campus and in the community. Several students worked together to secure the 2020 Interfaith Action Award, a grant from the Interfaith Youth Core, to create a designated interfaith space on campus.

The space is currently in the works for the first floor of Alexander Hall, a campus residence hall. When completed, it will serve as a calming and welcoming space for students from all religious and spiritual backgrounds. Students hope to provide a comprehensive interfaith education library, prayer rugs, candles, and other supplies that are of use to religious practitioners. Read more about the project here.
