Pittsburgh Connection

The Pittsburgh skyline from Mt. Washington

Want to explore beyond campus? W&J is just south of Pittsburgh, which was voted the #2 most livable city in America in 2018. We love it here, and we think you will, too!

We’ve got art, music, and pro sports. We also have a Robot Hall of Fame. And Picklesburgh. And Randyland.

Whether your tastes trend toward weekend museum crawls or funky niche pop-up shops, W&J makes it easy for you to get into the city and experience the things you love. The Pittsburgh Pipeline, our free student shuttle into the city, can help you get there!

One-of-a-Kind Shopping

You’ll be able to get around Washington, Pa. on Thursdays with The Rush, W&J’s free local shopping shuttle for students. It’ll get you to Target, Walmart, and other local stops so you can get grocery shopping and errands done. But if you’re looking for something different hop on The Pittsburgh Pipeline (or in your car – you can keep yours on campus, you know!), and check out these Pittsburgh spots:

  • Market Square
  • Strip District
  • Station Square
  • South Side Works

Annual events I Made It! Market and the Pittsburgh Vintage Mixer are also great for finding something one-of-a-kind.

Food for Every Taste

We couldn’t begin to list all of our favorite Pittsburgh restaurants. We recommend you check out Pittsburgh Restaurant Week, which is held each summer and winter, for great deals on restaurants that celebrate a variety of cultural foods and Pittsburgh favorites.

Museums for Every Trend

If you’re a museum crawler, you’ll want to make the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh one of your first stops. The Carnegie Science Center is also cool (it has an IMAX theater!). But here are a few unique ones we think you’ll like, too:

  • Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum
    • Free for W&J students! Just show your W&J ID at the ticket desk.
  • The Mattress Factory Museum
  • The Andy Warhol Museum
  • The Post-Natural History Center
  • The Clemente Museum

Tunes for Every Ear and Stages for Every Character

Pittsburgh is a great place to hear your favorite bands, whether you’re after a big name stadium show or that quirky indie group you liked before they were famous. It’s also a home for diverse theatre experiences, from staged readings to traveling Broadway shows.

We recommend checking out the schedules for Heinz Hall and The Benedum Center. Here’s a (very!) short list of other cool places to catch a show or another great arts experience:

  • Smalls Theatre
  • Stage AE
  • Rex Theater
  • Pittsburgh Public Theater
  • City of Asylum

A Field for Every Sport

We know not all of you are Pittsburgh sports fans, and that’s ok. But if you want to see what Steel City black and gold is all about, or if you want catch your home team while they’re in town, try these locations. Sometimes you’ll find concerts at these venues, too:

  • Heinz Field
  • PPG Paints Arena
  • PNC Park

Can’t-Miss Annual Events

There are lots of annual events you won’t want to miss, including opportunities to nerd out at Pittsburgh’s Comic Con event, or represent yourself with pride. We also have Furries, and we’re proud of it.

  • Three Rivers Arts Festival
  • Pittsburgh Pride Equality March
  • Anthrocon (the Furry Convention!)
  • Steel City Con
  • Greater Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival
  • Pittsburgh Light Up Night

We didn’t mention even half of what Pittsburgh has to offer. Luckily, W&J is a VisitPITTSBURGH partner. Check their website often for upcoming events and more great locations to experience your favorite things.
