Safe Zone

Washington & Jefferson College Safe Zone program identifies and trains faculty, staff, and students who are committed to social justice and diversity to provide support and serve as a resource for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex or allied (LGBTQIA) campus community.

The Safe Zone Steering Committee nominates individuals from the W&J campus community based on their commitment to equality, openness, approachability, acceptance, and their ability to being supportive of any LGBTQIA student, faculty, or staff member. All individuals who are nominated are invited to participate in special training on the subjects of sexual orientation and gender identity, and to make a commitment to be available to assist LGBTQIA members of the campus community. After they complete Safe Zone training, they are identified around campus by displaying the W&J Safe Zone sticker in and/or around their office, work space, or residence hall.

Safe Zone members provides a safe space where an individual will feel comfortable to discuss their sexual orientation, gender identity, or any concerns dealing with their campus experience that relates to their sexual orientation. Safe Zone members will always treat any member from the LGBTQIA community with dignity and respect and will hold any conversation between them with the strictest confidentiality. In addition, each member will be provided with a resource guide to help answer questions and situations that they may encounter with A LGBTQIA student, faculty, or staff member.

The Safe Zone program is co-sponsored by Gay Straight Alliance, Safe Zone Steering Committee, Office of Diversity Programs & Multicultural Affairs, and is fully supported by the Office of the President.
