(1/2 course)
This course is designed for students interested in learning how to prepare for and
complete day-hikes in the outdoors. Through classroom discussions and
demonstrations, students will learn about appropriate gear and supplies for basic
hiking; mitigation of environmental hazards; identification and navigation to
locations with hikes appropriate to interest and personal fitness; outdoor ethics and
trail etiquette; and design of longer hikes. Through outdoor recreation, both as a
group and individually, students will complete several hikes of varying duration
and length during scheduled class sessions and outside of class. In this PHA
course, students should be prepared for hiking outdoors in inclement weather and
will minimally need appropriate footwear (lightweight hiking boots), a small-medium backpack (e.g., bookbag), and a journal.
